Crypto DCA calculator

What if you had bought crypto on a schedule? Pick a coin, an amount and how often, and see what it would be worth today using real daily prices.

Prices are daily closes in USD from Coinbase. Other currencies use that day's ECB reference rate. Bitcoin data starts Jul 20, 2015.

Buying $100 of Bitcoin every week from Jan 1, 2020 to Nov 1, 2026 means 357 purchases totaling $35,700. That stack would be worth $96,375, a gain of +170%.

Questions

What is dollar-cost averaging (DCA)?

Dollar-cost averaging means investing a fixed amount on a fixed schedule, for example $100 every week, no matter what the price is. You buy more coins when the price is low and fewer when it is high, which smooths out your average cost and removes the pressure of timing the market.

How does this calculator work?

For every scheduled date it buys the chosen amount at that day's closing price in USD, as reported by Coinbase, minus the fee you enter. It then values everything you accumulated at the closing price on the end date. Taxes, spreads and withdrawal fees are not included.

Is DCA better than investing a lump sum?

Not always. When prices rise steadily, investing everything at once tends to win because the money is in the market longer. DCA tends to win when prices fall or swing after you start. Its main benefit is lower regret and less timing risk, not a higher expected return. The comparison under each result shows which came out ahead for your dates.

Where does the price data come from?

Daily closing prices come from Coinbase Exchange's public market data in USD. The history for each coin starts when Coinbase listed it, so some coins have shorter histories than their actual age.

Does past performance mean I will get the same result?

No. These are backtests of what would have happened. Crypto prices are very volatile and future returns can be far lower, including losses. Nothing on this site is financial advice.
