Bitcoin retirement calculator

How much could Bitcoin be worth by the time you retire? Enter what you hold, how much you buy each month and a growth rate you find reasonable, and see the projected value, what it means in today's money and the income it could pay.

A steady growth rate is an assumption, not a forecast: real prices swing far more. Income is in today's money, after inflation.

Buying $200 of Bitcoin every month for 20 years, with the price growing 15% a year, you would hold 0.2049 BTC worth $262,341 in 2046, about $145,252 in today's money. Withdrawing 4% a year would pay about $5,810 a year ($484.17 a month) in today's money.

How the projection works

Starting from today's price, the price grows by your yearly rate, applied a little each month. Every month your buy adds coins at that month's price, so later buys get fewer coins when the price is rising. The value at retirement is the coins you have times the projected price.

Future dollars buy less than today's, so the result is also shown divided by the inflation you entered. Income is that inflation-adjusted value times your withdrawal rate; 4% a year is a common rule of thumb for retirement savings, though for an asset as volatile as Bitcoin many people plan for less. The table shows how much the outcome depends on the growth rate, which nobody can know in advance.

Questions

What growth rate should I use for Bitcoin?

Nobody knows. Bitcoin has averaged far more than stocks since 2015, but with drops of 70% or more along the way, and past returns get harder to repeat as an asset grows. Try several rates, including low ones, and look at the table to see the range.

Is 4% a safe withdrawal rate for Bitcoin?

The 4% rule comes from studies of stock and bond portfolios. Bitcoin is much more volatile, so selling a fixed share in a bad year can drain savings faster. Many people hold only part of their retirement savings in crypto for that reason.

Why show the value in today's money?

Because a million dollars in 30 years will buy much less than a million today. With 3% inflation, prices roughly double in 24 years, so the today's-money figure is a better sense of the lifestyle the savings could pay for.
