Is crypto regulated in Italy?
Yes. Italy applies MiCA, the EU’s crypto law, supervised by Consob and the Banca d’Italia. The transition period ended on 30 June 2026: since 1 July only platforms licensed under MiCA in Italy or another EU country may serve customers here, and all six on this page are. Binance has no MiCA licence in the EU. You can look any company up in Consob’s or ESMA’s register.
A licence means the exchange must keep your crypto separate from its own and follow EU rules, but crypto is not covered by deposit insurance.
Taxes
From 2026 gains on crypto are taxed at 33%, up from 26%; euro stablecoins stay at 26%. The €2,000 tax-free threshold was removed in 2025, so every gain counts. Swapping one coin for another with the same characteristics is not taxed. You also pay 0.2% a year on the value of your crypto: Italian platforms such as Conio charge it for you, otherwise you pay it in the RW section of your return, where gains go in section RT. Since January 2026 exchanges across the EU report their users’ crypto to the tax authorities under DAC8. Keep a record of every buy and sell and ask a commercialista before filing.
