Bitcoin halving countdown

Every 210,000 blocks, the number of new bitcoins paid to miners for each block is cut in half. This countdown estimates when the next halving will happen, using the current block height and the recent pace of new blocks.

How the date is estimated

The halving happens at a fixed block height, not on a fixed date. The countdown takes the blocks left until that height and multiplies them by the recent average time between blocks, which is usually a little under 10 minutes. It refreshes from mempool.space while the page is open.

Block times change as miners join or leave, so the estimated date can move by days or weeks over time. The table shows Bitcoin's price on each past halving day, one year later and today, using Coinbase daily closes, which start in 2015.

Questions

What is the Bitcoin halving?

A rule in Bitcoin's code that cuts the block reward in half every 210,000 blocks, roughly every four years. It started at 50 BTC per block in 2009 and is 3.125 BTC since April 2024. It is what limits the total supply to 21 million coins.

When is the next Bitcoin halving?

At block 1,050,000, expected in the first half of 2028. The countdown above gives the current estimate, which shifts slightly as the pace of new blocks changes.

Does the price always go up after a halving?

In the year after each past halving the price ended higher, but every cycle also had deep drops along the way, and past patterns are no guarantee. Many other factors move the price, and the halving is widely known in advance.
